Summer Music Camp 2020: Grow Through Music

Walker|West is hosting our summer camp session from August 3rd – August 14th –this time it’s all virtual! Register your beginning musician (ages 7 – 12) to gather, explore and grow through music.

Camp runs Monday through Friday for two weeks. Students participate in 2 morning core classes between 10:00 to 11:00 and 2 afternoon elective instrumental classes between 12:30 to 2:00.

Course Descriptions (Core classes run 10am – 11am)

Core Class 1: “Soul Sessions: Music & Mindfulness” (All students)

This 20-30 minute session will bring all students in the camp together each morning. Using a holistic exploration of what it means to be thriving musicians: Mind, Body, Soul, Spirit campers will start the day by going over the current day’s theme. They will spend some time reflecting on the previous days’ theme before splitting off into their age appropriate classes and electives.

Core Class 2A: “Music Appreciation” (Ages 7-9)

Instructors will introduce instruments, music, and musicians who have pressed for social change throughout history (i.e. The Staples Singers “If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me)” or Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come”). For this class students may use instruments already available to them, voices, body percussion, pots and pans, etc. Instructors and students may create an original song related to the theme of social change.

Core Class 2B: “Music Production / Songwriting” (Ages 10-12)

Instructors will introduce instruments, music, and musicians who have pressed for social change throughout history. Students and faculty will work together to produce a song to express the change they want to see in the world.

Elective Music Instruction (students choose 2 instruments)

Students select two different 25 minute electives for group lessons. Electives may include drumming, keyboard, and vocal instruction / singing sessions. Students can use their own instruments or Walker West staff can deliver an instrument to your home before camp begins.

Elective 1: Community Building through Drumming

Students will learn traditional West African rhythms which have been used to share messages of healing, peace and celebration. Students will also learn rhythms created by the instructor for youth drumming classes. The instructor will use pre-recorded videos to teach the rhythms. Students will share and review what they have learned during the remote classes. This class will emphasize the values of Discipline, Respect, Unity and Music. Buckets and drum sticks will be provided.

Elective 2: “Keys To Imagination” Basic Keyboard Lessons

Keys To Imagination is an introductory course to playing keyboard instruments. Students are offered this elective as a group lesson. The instructor will lead breakout sessions via Zoom, and the session will begin with a short lecture; followed by an engagement/ Q&A session.

Elective 3: “Liberate Every Voice” Beginning Vocal Performance Instruction

Students will learn the basics of warming up the voice, tone, pitch, breathing and ear training. Additionally, we will cover identifying with the character behind the song and convey this emotion to the listener through our vocal performance. Using the voice as a tool to relieve and release stress and trauma will also be covered and students will also grow in their confidence by learning to use their speaking & singing voice to express intent and create change personally and in their community. What’s Needed: Your voice and a growth mindset!

How old are the students participating in this camp?

What does my student need to participate in camp?

How much does camp cost?

This camp session is $160.00 per student. Tuition assistance is available, please contact Student Services for more details (info@walkerwest.org).

What is Fund-A-Friend?

Do I need to purchase an instrument for my student to participate?

Students can use their own instruments or Walker West staff can deliver an instrument to your home before camp begins.

Will the instruments be cleaned before camp participants receive them?

Yes, the instruments will be cleaned according to cleaning and disinfecting guidance for schools and childcare programs issued by the Minnesota Department of Health.

Can my student change electives during the session?

Given the duration of the camp, students will not be able to change electives during the session.

What is your refund/cancellation policy?

A student may decide to withdraw from the camp at any time, but no refunds will be given after the program start date.

Can my student attend if we don’t live in Saint Paul?

Yes, students from all over are welcome to join our camps each summer. Because this camp will be held online that gives even more options for families to join us this year. Please feel free to join this camp, or our upcoming summer jazz intensive –and do tell a friend!
