Walker|West Celebrates 30th Anniversary and Exterior Redesign
Walker|West will celebrate the completion of its exterior redesign project from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 12 at 760 Selby Avenue, St. Paul. The event kicks off a year-long celebration of Walker|West’s 30th anniversary.
Mayor Melvin Carter and his Communications Director Peter Leggett will attend. Before joining the Mayor’s office, Leggett was Walker|West’s Executive Director. Selby Avenue will be closed to traffic so the public can view the new facade and listen to students and faculty perform.
“The renovation identifies Walker|West as a place of professionalism and artistic expression. We hope it becomes a point of pride within our community,” said Duane Ramseur, Interim Executive Director of Walker|West.
Artist Ta-coumba Aiken and Cuningham Group Architecture, Inc. designed the renovation. Welsh Construction built it. The project was made possible through the generous contributions of:
- Mardag Foundation
- Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation
- Knight Foundation
- Pohlad Family Foundation
- Metropolitan Regional Arts Council
- Saint Paul Star Program
- R. Bigelow Foundation
- The Ruth A. & Raymond A. Reister Charitable Trust
- The Boss Foundation
- The Harlan Boss Foundation for the Arts
- Members of the Walker West community
Engaging Our Community, Investing in Our Neighborhood
Walker|West board members, staff, faculty, students, parents and neighbors all provided input early in the design process. The goal of the project was to create a visual statement that would:
- Reflect the quality of artistic activity occurring inside the building
- Represent Walker|West’s role in the neighborhood and the Twin Cities music community
- Transform a part of Selby Ave. that has lagged behind others in investment and development
Growing Through Music Since 1988
A concert celebrating Walker|West’s 30th anniversary will take place Sunday, September 16 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Como Lakeside Pavilion in St. Paul. Yolande Bruce and Walker|West students and faculty will be featured performers.
Rev. Carl Walker and Grant West founded Walker|West in 1988. The organization creates a music learning community rooted in the African American cultural experience where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather, explore and grow through music.
